Why I’m smudging my way into a new week

It’s a brand new week, the perfect time to clear out any stagnant or negative energy and create some positive vibes for the days ahead. And the way things are going in the world right now, we need all the help we can get. Enter, smudging.

My love of smudging with sage began a couple of years ago, and even though it’s definitely high up the spiritual white-witch scale, I’ve even managed to get my boyfriend on board!

So what exactly is sage smudging, you ask? It’s an ancient art, which was traditionally used by the Native Americans, and is said to attract positive energies and influence by creating balance and connection, driving away unwanted negative energies from a person, space or object.

The idea is to light the end of the sage bundle, then blow it out so that the tip slowly smoulders. First off, cleanse your own aura by moving the smudge around your head and move down towards your toes.

Next, you walk around each room of your home, wafting the smoke into each corner. I like to think good thoughts, or set intensions too while I’m smudging.

Make sure you walk around in a clockwise direction, and smudge into cupboards, wardrobes and the corners where energies can become trapped.

Essentially, smudging is a cleansing ritual. Sage is said to emit negative ions and our aura holds positive ions. Through the smudging process we can neutralise our aura or the energy of spaces and objects to cleanse and renew them, creating a sacred space.

So far, so out there, right? Stay with me.

There are also claims that sage smudging can also help eliminate over 90% of bacteria from the air. And once the smoke settles, it can help alleviate allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions.

We recently moved into a new home, so of course the first thing I did was I brought out my sage smudging stick to cleanse every corner of the old house. And who knows if it really has worked, but I’m getting good vibes from the place so far!

I’ve been smudging once a week since then, and I’m finding that it’s an enjoyable and calming ritual.

Fancy giving smudging it a go? Here are three sage smudge sticks to help you kick off your new spiritual habit.
