Summer, summer, summer time… It’s here! And summer in Sydney comes with the allure of endless beach days – or pre- or post-work beach days and weekends, at least!
We are lucky, here in Australia, as beach days are certainly not limited to just the summer months, and we have our fair share of beach days year round, to be honest. But I know that I am picturing a summer filled with sun, sand, sparkling waves and blue skies this year.
For me, nothing beats a day spent by the sea. And no matter if you are heading to your local beach or a sandy shore interstate – or even travelling overseas – before you grab your towel and sunscreen, let’s make sure you’re fully prepared for a perfect day out. From protecting your skin with SPF and shade to lounging in style with the trendiest beach accessories, there are a few summer favourites I come back to time and again.
Let’s get ready to elevate your beach game and make the most of every sun-soaked moment. Dive in and discover the top six must-have beach essentials that will take your seaside experience to the next level!
1. Sunscreen
It’s no secret that spending time in the sun can lead to sunburn and long-term skin damage. That’s why sunscreen is an absolute must for any beach trip. In fact, it’s a must for most days in Australia – whether heading to the beach or not.
Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. I always choose SPF 50+. Remember to reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating, to stay protected throughout the day.
2. Beach Towel
A good beach towel is more than just a piece of fabric to lay on—it’s your personal oasis on the sand. Opt for a large, absorbent towel that’s both comfortable to lie on and quick-drying to keep you cosy and dry after a dip in the ocean. Bonus points for choosing a stylish towel that reflects your personality or aesthetic and adds a pop of colour to your beach setup. Personally, I choose a Turkish towel as it can double as a sarong, and doesn’t take so long to dry after I’ve used it.
3. Hydration
Spending time in the sun and saltwater can leave you feeling dehydrated, so it’s essential to stay hydrated throughout the day. Heading down early? Don’t forget your reusable coffee cup. And also be sure to pack plenty of water in a reusable bottle to quench your thirst and help you stay refreshed in the heat. Consider bringing along some hydrating snacks like fresh fruit or electrolyte-rich drinks to replenish your energy levels and keep you feeling your best.
4. Beach Bag
Keep all your beach essentials organised and easily accessible with a sturdy beach bag. Look for a spacious tote with multiple compartments to store your sunscreen, water bottle, towel, and other belongings. Bonus tip: Choose a waterproof bag to protect your valuables from sand and splashes, and opt for a lightweight, easy-to-carry design for added convenience.
5. Sun Hat and Sunglasses
Protect your face and eyes from the sun’s harsh UV rays with a stylish sun hat and a pair of UV-blocking sunglasses. A wide-brimmed hat not only adds a chic touch to your beach look but also provides much-needed shade to keep you cool and comfortable. Likewise, polarised sunglasses not only shield your eyes from glare but also reduce the risk of eye strain and sun damage.
6. Beach Umbrella
I always bring along a sturdy beach umbrella to create a shady oasis on the sand. Look for an umbrella with UV protection to shield you from harmful sun exposure and adjustable features for customised coverage. With your beach umbrella set up, you can relax in comfort and enjoy endless hours of beachside bliss without worrying about getting too much sun.
With these six must-have beach essentials packed and ready to go, you’re all set for a perfect day out by the sea. Enjoy!
